SingTel grows cloud customer base to 200,000

The number of Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SingTel) customers using cloud services grew to 200,000 in the quarter ended 30 June 2012, from 180,000 in the preceding quarter. The Singapore company revealed this recently as it reported a 3% increase in first quarter net profit to US$759 million (S$945 million) with improved performance from its "regional mobile associates and an exceptional gain from the divestment of a non-strategic investment".
Meanwhile, its Group ICT won new managed services customers, including a five-year G-cloud contract from the Singapore government. Data and Internet revenue rose 3% to S$408 million as growth in managed services offset planned price adjustments with the rollout of the Next Generation Nationwide Broadband Network. Internet-related revenue rose 6% with increased adoption of higher-tier plans and fibre-based services.
Revenue from Singapore rose 8% to S$1.67 billion, with strong contribution from its subsidiary, NCS, whose revenue grew 20% to S$333 million, driven by projects for the Ministry of Education and other customers.
Recently, NCS expanded its partnership with data protection and big data management vendor Quantum Corp beyond Singapore to the Asia-Pacific region. The move aims to help enterprises deploy technologies and architectures such as deduplication, virtualization and cloud that promise better ways of managing and protecting data.
In the region, Indonesia-based Telkomsel had another strong quarter, with 10% revenue growth across its voice, SMS and data products. Its share of pre-tax profit increased 15% to S$241 million as its mobile customer base reached 117 million, up 14.9 million or 15%. SingTel owns a 35% stake in Telkomsel.
