Rackspace’s private cloud edition runs OpenStack

Rackspace Hosting today announced the release of Rackspace Cloud: Private Edition, an OpenStack-powered cloud that helps businesses build medium to large scale private clouds in their own data centers.

Rackspace Cloud: Private Edition enables organizations to deploy private clouds either in their own data center, one of Rackspace’s partner data centers (such as Equinix’s International Business Exchange data centers), or one of Rackspace’s worldwide data centers.

“The customer maintains more control, with no software license fees or technology lock-in, and they can now rely on one company for public, private, and hybrid cloud management regardless of location," said Jim Curry, general manager of Rackspace Cloud Builders.

More than just basic server virtualization, Rackspace Cloud: Private Edition offers general public cloud features, such as instant provisioning through a self-service portal for employees, API access for developers and admin control panels to set quotas and manage usage, which can all be available in a qualified data center of the customer's choice.

“Rackspace Cloud: Private Edition is an example of pattern that we believe will dominate enterprise cloud transformations: private cloud as the entry point to a hybrid cloud strategy that eventually spans both public and private options,” said Jeff Schneider, CEO of MomentumSI.

Growing partner network

Rackspace is building a growing network of certified deployment partners, which includes Cloud Technology Partners (cloudTP), MomentumSI, and TeamSun, which can build clouds using the Rackspace reference architecture in the customer’s data center of choice, including Equinix International Business Exchange (IBX) data centers worldwide.

The initial design is based on proven OpenStack software configurations and hardware from Cisco and Dell, and is expected to be expanded in 2012 to include additional technology options. Additionally, Rackspace’s technology partners are announcing support today including Opscode and RightScale.

“Enterprise IT departments now have another great choice in private cloud with the new Rackspace Cloud: Private Edition,” said Mark Linebaugh, VP Next Generation Compute Solutions at Dell. “As one of the first cloud solution providers to join the OpenStack community, we’re excited to be a part of it. Rackspace pushed us for the lowest total cost of ownership and the PowerEdge C6105 server, our most power-efficient server for cloud workloads, provides the right mix of performance and efficiency so they can keep costs down.”
