Hewlett-Packard's move to buy US-based automation vendor Stratavia aims to smooth out the deployment and management of hybrid IT environments.

The deal gives HP Stratavia's Data Palette Platform, which tackles such tasks as auto-discovery of database assets, tracking configurations and role-based access controls. Stratavia CEO Thor Culverhouse said the deal has potential to minimize downtime and mistakes.

This is only the latest appearance of HP's voracious appetite. In early August, the company announced plans to buy US-based software security company Fortify Software, also for an undisclosed sum.

And, of course, the IT giant is right now in a bidding war with Dell over data storage company 3Par. No coyness on monetary figures here though, as both HP and Dell have thrown around several numbers, the latest of which is US$1.8 billion -- an offer from HP that is US$200 million more than its competitor's last bid. Stratavia must be turning green.
