Equinix opens data center in Shanghai

Equinix, a US-based provider of global data center services, announced on 23 March a strategic partnership agreement with Shanghai Data Solution for network and communications services in Shanghai, China.
Shanghai Data Solution (SDS) is a Shanghai-based systems integrator specializes in data communication, network access, information value added services and software development. The company is joint investment of Shanghai Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park Development Corporation, Shanghai Telecom Industry, DaZhong Transportation and ZiJiang (Group).
Going by the partnership, customers of Equinix are expected to receive a similar level of availability and reliability of colocation services in China through the SDS data center, located in the Pudong area of Shanghai, as they do within the 49 International Business Exchange (IBX) data centers that Equinix operates worldwide.
According to Equinix, the company has performed multiple engineering audits on the newest SDS data center to ensure it meets the availability requirements and facility standards to deliver colocation services. In addition to providing ongoing operations support to the SDS team, Equinix is planning to open a coordination and support function office in Shanghai in Q2 2010.
Shanghai's foreign direct investment reached 4.5% YOY
Shanghai is one of the China's largest commerce and financial centers. With a population of more than 20 million people, the city is renowned for its sophisticated infrastructure and a large pool of English-speaking professionals. The city’s foreign direct investment reached a record level in 2009 -- a total of US$10.5 billion in investments from overseas, up 4.5% on a year-on-year basis, according to the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce.
"Shanghai, home to a vast base of multinational corporations, is identified by Equinix customers as a top location for buying premium quality colocation services in China,” said Samuel Lee, president of Equinix in Asia Pacific. “A large percentage of the SDS existing customer base consists of foreign telecom operators, financial institutions and multinational corporations."
