Dell has signed an agreement to acquire US-based storage virtualization solutions provider 3Par for US$1.15 billion.

Founded in 1999 and headquartered in Fremont, 3Par provides virtualized storage solutions with data management features, including dynamic tiering and thin provisioning, for multi-tenant cloud-computing environments.

According to a media statement, 3Par's utility storage platform can address the limitations of monolithic and modular arrays, and reduce storage administration costs by up to 90% and infrastructure costs by up to 75%.

Dell plans to integrate 3PAR into its storage portfolio which comprises PowerVault, EqualLogic and Dell/EMC. With 3Par, Dell is expected to offer systems and options at all storage tiers, from direct-attach to highly-virtualized, clustered SANS, with a goal of reducing overall data management costs by 50%.

After closing, Dell plans to maintain and invest in additional engineering and sales capability. There are no plans announced to move the current operations.

Brad Anderson, Dell's senior vice president in the enterprise product group, said: “3Par brings the same values of performance, agility and ease-of-use to higher end, virtualized storage deployments as EqualLogic does for the entry-level and mid-range, rounding out our industry-leading solutions portfolio.”
