Chinese tech firm cheered cloud success

Beijing-based Chinese tech firm Subaye announced it has signed up 9,726 paying subscribers to its cloud computing services since promoting it in March 2010.

According to Subaye in a press statement, the company has added 4,526 new cloud computing subscribers in the last four months, enlarging its subscriber base by 87%.

Incorporated in 1997, Subaye is branded as an outsourced marketing services provider. The company engages in online video advertising and cloud computing businesses, and operates a business model similar to the online shopping giant Amazon.com and the Chinese online trading site Alibaba.com.

Cai Zhiguang, CEO of Subaye, said, "We are very pleased with the tremendous growth in both our online platforms -- video showcase and cloud computing. "We are especially encouraged about the growth in new markets such as Chongqing, Fujian, Zhejiang. It is further evidence that Subaye is gaining share in the burgeoning online services market. As we introduced more value-added services and expand into new regions, we expect further growth for new and existing customers.”

Subaye reported US$45 million in revenue last year, so if that cloud bonanza is new money, that's a powerful testament indeed. If, on the other hand, Subaye is just taking the opportunity to pitch its existing online services as "cloud," then it's less impressive. The proof is in the pudding, of course -- if Subaye is a US$60 million dollar firm next year, we'll all know.
